Outlander Tours at the Tryon Palace

If you’ve read Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series books, or have seen the tv series on Starz, you can’t help but become a fan as I have. It all began for me after moving to New Bern, NC three years ago. I live within walking distance to the Tryon Palace, where a small portion of the historically based, time-travel, romance story takes place.

Being a modern doll collector and former doll shop owner, I knew of Tonner Doll’s “Jamie and Claire Fraser” character dolls but, at the time, had never seen the series or read the books. After relocating, or “semi-retiring” from Massachusetts to North Carolina, I saw ads for Outlander Tours at the Tryon. I decided to watch the first season and ended up hooked. I binge-watched the remaining 4 seasons after that. I’ve now read all 8 novels (averaging 1000 pages each) the 4 Lord John spin-off books as well as the background novellas and short stories. I have watched the series at least 3 times (all 5 seasons) and rewatched my favorite episodes countless times while waiting through “Droughtlander” — defined as the time between the last televised shows and the waiting period for the next season…which has become extra long during the Covid pandemic. The series attracts guys and gals alike since it follows the novels closely which are loaded with sex, violence, drama and romance.

So, of course, when I got an email telling me that the Outlander Tours at the Tryon were starting up again Saturday, March 20, 2021, I bought tickets. This year, Tryon is celebrating its 250th Anniversary.

The Outlander Tour is based on the view of the British experience and politics during the American Revolution in opposition to Jamie and Claire’s view of the politics of the time. But, you don’t have to be a fan of Outlander or even know about Outlander to enjoy the tours at the Tryon Palace. We enjoyed the Garden Tours 2 years ago (have we been cooped up that long?), so, off to the Tryon on the 20th, wearing our masks of course…
